My Idea, Purpose, and Audience
A man said to the universe:
“Sir, I exist!”
“However,” replied the universe,
“The fact has not created in me
A sense of obligation.”
(Crane, 2016)
Content creation becomes more and more popular every day. With 6.5 million monthly broadcasters on Twitch (Twitch Tracker, 2020), 500 hours of video uploaded to YouTube per minute (Aslam, 2020), and more than 500,000 active influencers on Instagram (Aslam, 2020); it is easy to understand why making an impact as a content creator can be so challenging. In the following posts, I will describe what makes me unique as a content creator and how I intend to market myself to create a ripple in this very vast ocean of content.
“Just Digital Me” is a personal brand I am creating to use in every context. I came up with the name in 2015, and I have been using it ever since then for Gaming, Artwork, Communities, Networking, and more. My business plan is to expand this brand to achieve an online customer base to market my artistic creations – specifically high poly 3d models.
I will be creating these high poly count 3d models with the software packages Zbrush and Maya; and marketing them to the four different audiences shown in the diagram to the left, highlighted in pink. The primary audience which I will target is represented in the Venn diagram by the star icon. This bracket consists of customers who can afford to purchase a commission of a 3d model of their fantasy character. The secondary target will be an audience who likes the fantasy genre and wants to buy a 3d model but perhaps cannot afford a commission. I will target this audience by selling models I have created, as side projects between commissions, at a significantly lower price through a web store (anyone can buy these). Thirdly, I will target an audience who can afford a commission and likes the fantasy genre but does not necessarily want a 3d model; since I have some illustration and 2d art skills, I can create posters, graphics and other 2d commissions. Lastly, I will target an audience who can afford a commission and wants to own a 3d model but is not interested in fantasy; this will mean producing models of subjects such as beloved pets or realism portraits.
Most of the models that I make will be custom made to order and created to a commission specification. I will package the relevant 3d printable or game ready files and send them to the customer using an online sharing platform such as One Drive. Printing the 3d models myself is something I can consider expanding into later down the line. I can also create project timeline documents with progress images and before and after shots of any requested alterations. Having a personal project document will make commissions feel special and provide a great example of my workflow to potential customers. Firstly, I will create high poly versions of characters from Dungeons and Dragons and World of Warcraft. I can branch out further as I gain more experience and broaden my portfolio.
The 3d Rendering Market was worth 2 Billion in 2019, and experts predict this to rise to more than 9 Billion by 2026 (Wadhwani & Kasnale, 2019). The increase in demand for customized 3d products and the increasing availability of 3d printing will allow for new gaps in the market that I will be able to fill. The biggest issue will be making sure I am reaching the right audience to sell my products. I already have a certain amount of infrastructure in place; Twitch, Facebook, Twitter, Linked In, and Discord. However, I should also look to expand this infrastructure to websites such as Art Station, Polycount, YouTube, and Reddit. Having all of these websites and communities running simultaneously with regular posts should steadily increase my audience.
